Portable vs. Under-Counter Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems: Which Fits Your Setup?

So you’ve decided reverse osmosis (RO) water is the way to go for your water, welcome to the club. Now comes the practical question: should you get a portable RO system you set up on brew day, or install a dedicated under-counter unit? Both get you to the same place (very low-TDS water), but they suit different setups. Let’s break it down honestly.
How they’re the same
Both styles use the same core technology: water is pushed through sediment and carbon pre-filters, then across a semi-permeable RO membrane that rejects the vast majority of dissolved solids. Per the CDC, reverse osmosis units are among the most capable point-of-use treatment options, removing dissolved minerals, nitrates, and many contaminants that simple carbon filtration can’t. Either way, you should expect output water in the single-digit-to-low-double-digit ppm TDS range (confirm it with a TDS meter).
The case for portable
No plumbing, no commitment. A portable RO system connects to a garden spigot, laundry hookup, or faucet (with a simple adapter) and drains to a bucket or floor drain. Renters, apartment brewers, and anyone who doesn’t want to drill into a countertop or tap a cold-water line will appreciate this.
It goes where you go. Garage in the summer, kitchen in the winter, a friend’s place for a collab homebrew, a portable unit doesn’t care.
Lower cost of entry. You get true RO water without the price of a full under-sink installation with a storage tank and dedicated faucet.
The tradeoff is patience. RO is a slow process by nature, and without a pressurized storage tank you’ll be collecting water in real time. Most brewers simply start collecting the night before brew day. Colder water and lower household water pressure slow production further... that’s physics, not a defect.
The case for under-counter
Water on demand. A tank-based under-counter system keeps purified water pressurized and ready at a dedicated faucet. Need more than 10 gallons this weekend? Your pure water is already waiting.
Whole-household benefits. Once RO water is plumbed in, it stops being just a brewing tool. Coffee, cooking, drinking water, aquariums, humidifiers, ice... the household use case often justifies the system on its own.
Set-and-forget convenience. No setup or teardown on brew day. Change the filters on schedule and it just works.
The tradeoffs are installation and footprint. You’ll need space under the sink, a connection to the cold line, and a drain connection for the reject water. It’s a very manageable DIY job for most people, but it is a job.
Quick decision guide
Rent your home, or brew in different locations? Portable.
Homebrew occasionally? Portable, no idle equipment plumbed in.
Homebrew big batches? Under-counter, so volume is never a bottleneck.
Want better water for the whole kitchen, not just the kettle? Under-counter.
On a budget or just testing the RO waters? Portable now, you can always upgrade later.
One more thing: don’t skip verification
Whichever route you choose, membranes and pre-filters wear out on their own schedule, not the calendar’s. A quick TDS reading before you collect brewing water takes ten seconds and tells you your membrane is still doing its job. It’s the cheapest insurance in brewing.
